The artisan Cristina Gomes, who proudly calls herself ``a true Poveira,`` nurtures an unwavering passion for her homeland and dedicates herself tirelessly to promoting, respecting, and preserving the centuries-old stories and techniques that breathe life into the renowned Camisolas Poveiras.
The initial spark
Cristina's weaving of ties with the past began early. Guided by her mother's hands, she learned the art of knitting as a young girl, a common practice in Póvoa homes, passed down from generation to generation as a family treasure. Her fascination with Camisolas Poveiras, distinctive garments adorned with intricate patterns and rich in symbolism, grew over the years. In 2010, the desire to deepen her knowledge led her to attend a course dedicated to this traditional art. Immersing herself in the learning marked the beginning of a journey focused on the production technique and the essence of the sweater. “I wanted to learn from the roots,” she confides, emphasising her desire to master the secrets of the tradition. Under the tutelage of Dona Gina, a highly experienced master, Cristina refined her skills and learned to value even more the symbols important to her community. The international recognition of Camisolas Poveiras in 2021, which reignited interest and appreciation for these pieces, motivated Cristina to redouble her production efforts. In January 2023, she obtained certification as an artisan of Camisolas Poveiras, a recognition that attests to her technical mastery and dedication to Póvoa's traditions. Today, in her craftwork, Cristina rarely makes other products. She primarily focuses on making the certified Camisola Poveira, a process that begins with selecting the purest wool from Serra da Estrela and culminates in the rigorous adherence to the specifications of the Camisola Poveira.
Art against adversities
Cristina Gomes's journey has been marked by unexpected challenges. Recently confronted with serious health issues, she had to interrupt her work at the Póvoa de Varzim municipality and slow down her sweater production, an activity she carries out as a hobby and as a way to connect to her cultural roots. However, physical limitations have not dimmed her creative spirit; rather, they have reinforced the courage that defines her work. “I do it bit by bit, as I can,” she reveals, determined not to let her health condition limit the expression of her talent. Her stance reveals a deep understanding of art: creation, especially one rooted in cultural traditions, requires not only technique but also a spiritual and emotional connection with the work. For the artisan, creating Camisolas Poveiras goes beyond the physical act of knitting; it is above all an act of preserving and sharing the history and values of her community. Cristina emphasises that her motivation to create is not financial but cultural and personal. “Handwork does not bring profit,” she notes, pointing to what she considers a general undervaluation of craftsmanship in Portugal. However, despite her artisanal activities being limited by her health circumstances and knitting occupying a place more of a pastime than a livelihood in her life, Cristina notices a growing recognition and appreciation for the Camisolas Poveiras she produces, as well as a more significant financial appreciation in the market. For the artisan, certification serves as a guarantee that each sweater is produced strictly following traditional techniques and standards, an aspect she approaches with seriousness and pride.
Between tradition and new market trends
Cristina acknowledges the persistent challenges that Portuguese craftsmanship faces, especially the lack of institutional support, but remains hopeful, wishing for a future where creative collaboration between artisans and designers prospers and inspires a new appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. She advocates for the creation of products that respect tradition but also bring compatible innovations. Cristina believes that such partnerships can enrich craftsmanship but insists that new elements must preserve the values associated with the Camisola Poveira, ensuring that tradition remains the core of each new creation. Cristina's story and perspective reveal a passionate dedication to Camisolas Poveiras, deeply connected to her love for traditions, culture, and the community of Póvoa de Varzim. Those who acquire a Camisola Poveira from her hands receive more than a crafted item; they receive a piece of courage, a reminder that beauty, strength, and art can be shared and eternalised in unique pieces, even in the most challenging moments.
