Aurora Handmade
elegance and mastery in poveiro craftsmanship
Text and photographs by Ana VascoThe fusion of fishing heritage with the art of knitting, running through the veins of the three Poveiro sisters, Paula, Fátima, and Anabela Oliveira, was essential for creating a bold project committed to preserving the artisanal tradition of Póvoa de Varzim: the Aurora Luxury Handmade studio. In the cosy shop, which exudes love and complicity, each creation is meticulously woven by the hands of the three sisters, and the certified sweaters they produce reflect the identity of the community and the deep connection of a Poveiro family with Portuguese craftsmanship.
The First Stitches
The journey of these artisans began in the 1970s when, as children, they started exploring their first knitting projects. At that time, making sweaters, hats, and socks represented a form of socialisation and financial contribution to the home. Their childhood was marked by challenges: their father emigrated in search of work, the six siblings early assumed adult responsibilities, and their mother emerged as an anchor and inspiration. Initially, the three girls in the family dedicated themselves to creating belts and adorning the fishermen's hats and socks with embroidery. They still hold memories of afternoons when many women, on the doorsteps of their homes, engaged in knitting under the setting sun that evoked the resilience and dance of the needles.
The sisters' commercial experience began early. The first sweaters they produced were delivered to ``Loja do Sol,`` a renowned establishment in Póvoa de Varzim that sold raw materials to artisans and distributed Poveiro sweaters throughout the country and beyond. The evolution towards professionalisation in the field of knitting became a natural consequence. Over the years, each sister, following her own path, honed her technical skills in the area.
Renewal and Commitment
In the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the closure of several knitting workshops threatened the region with unemployment, the sisters united, determined to turn this challenging period into the perfect opportunity to dedicate themselves entirely to their long-time passion. They chose the name ``Aurora`` for the studio, in honour of the matriarchs who preceded them, representing both the mastery of traditions and techniques and the awakening to the strengthening of the family's female bonds.
The studio, located in the same area where they grew up, reflects the lifestyle, shared purposes, and dreams they share. There, under the mantle of tradition and innovation, they embark daily on an artistic creation journey that begins at sunrise and extends for approximately 10 hours, a ritual of dedication and love for the art that defies time.
Recognition and Innovation
Overcoming initial obstacles, Aurora Luxury Handmade has established itself as a standard of excellence in the craft market. In addition to creating exclusive pieces, the sisters participate in various fairs, representing the municipality, showcasing their creations, and establishing direct contact with new clients.
The company's emblematic product is the Camisola Poveira, which obtained certification in September 2022. The first certified piece will never be sold, as it represents a manifesto for the sisters, a celebration of identity, and a symbol of their collective effort. It features the national coat of arms, the emblem of Cego do Maio, and Poveiro boats. Besides this piece, the studio also produces vests, jackets, ponchos, hats, dresses, and many other knitted items.
Although they highly value tradition, they are always open to innovation and, in partnerships with designers, they show a willingness to cross borders and create products that challenge expectations and enchant with originality.
Through the creations and voices of Fátima, Paula, and Anabela, there resonates a vibrant call for the appreciation of craftsmanship, for recognising its importance not only as a trade but as a dignified profession capable of uniting generations and telling the story of a people through each stitch, each loop. Aurora Luxury Handmade is more than a studio in Póvoa de Varzim; it is a place where love, tradition, and innovation intertwine, weaving a future where the past is honoured and art is eternalised. In a world where craftsmanship struggles for recognition, Aurora shines brightly as a beacon of creativity, quality, and tradition.
